The Communications Director will report directly to the Dean of the Graduate School and partner with programs within the Graduate School as well as departments and colleges at NC State University to promote graduate education. The Director is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive marketing, communication, and public relations plan for the Graduate School to promote the accomplishments of graduate students and programming with the goal of informing key partners and stakeholders across the University and externally throughout the State and the broader regions of their impacts.

The primary goal of the Director is to promote the activities, programs, and endeavors of the Graduate School as a model for graduate education both nationally and internationally. The Director will accomplish this by identifying and writing stories of graduate students and faculty research and accomplishments for release to media, for use on the NC State Graduate School website, for distribution via e-newsletters and print publications and for use on social media. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing a cutting-edge social media strategy for the Graduate School and providing guidance to the Graduate School administration and staff on the effective use of social media. The Director will build and maintain the brand of the Graduate School. The Director serves as the primary point of contact for outside media, University News Services, and faculty and staff for all communications and marketing, both routine and in the event of a significant news event. The Director should also work in close collaboration with other units within the Graduate School and serve as a catalyst for developing effective communications in the various settings and to the appropriate audiences.


The position operates with a high level of discretion and with minimal supervision, while exercising day-to-day decision-making that has a major impact on the image and credibility of the Graduate School and NC State University.

Leadership - 20%

  • Provide strong leadership and vision for the Graduate School in the area of communication and branding.
  • Lead public affairs for the Graduate School including media relations, news, periodicals, and communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Meet regularly with the Dean and team within the Graduate School to present strategies and approaches to continue to build awareness of graduate education and the events/activities of the Graduate School.
  • Continually evaluate the usefulness of various communication approaches, and design new methods and advances as needed.


Strategic Planning Activities â?? 30%

  • Research, craft, and disseminate the Graduate Schoolâ??s position on high-profile issues with the potential for media and community attention, working closely with University Communications.
  • Develop, implement, augment, and regularly update an integrated strategic communications plan to:
    • Advance the Graduate Schoolâ??s strategic vision and brand identity as part of NC State
    • Broaden local, state and national awareness and value of graduate programs and their impacts on the economic, societal and intellectual prosperity of North Carolinians
    • Increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences within and beyond the university
  • Advise the Dean and other Graduate School team leaders regarding sensitive public relations and emergency situations.
  • Develop short- and long-term accountability metrics and time lines for branding, marketing and communications and make key management decision in response to those results.
