The Office of Communications and Marketing is looking for a communications professional with a vibrant written voice and a gift for translating academic information for non-academic audiences. This individual will report to and assist the Director of Communications and Marketing and work closely with the Communications and Marketing staff to further the college`s brand reputation with an emphasis on compelling copy.
The position holder will be responsible for generating copy for a number of purposes including but not limited to internal communications, external communications, media, digital content, advertising and marketing. This position will also act as an editing and proofreading resource for the department. Occasionally, some help with grant writing may be required.
The ideal candidate will have a strong sense of the written word with an accomplished appreciation for its mechanics and a conscientious approach to writing. This individual will be a versatile storyteller who can collaborate with others in producing quality content in advancing support for college priorities. The candidate must also regard the work of those editing their prose and be teachable as to what is expected of their work product. Versatility in writing styles may be required. Strong knowledge of Associated Press style is recommended.
The candidate will also be called upon to manage various creative projects as needed with sensitivity to client relationships, managing client expectations and keeping deadlines
Other support duties within Communications and Marketing as well as the Division of Institutional Advancement and the Office of the President may be required as needed.

  • Identify and tell engaging stories (via multiple platforms) of members of the Meharry community;
  • Conduct interviews with faculty, staff, alumni, students, donors and friends;
  • Write a wide range of college materials, including but not limited to marketing copy for enrollment marketing publications, brochures and emails, website content, news stories, editorial content as needed, and alumni, student, faculty/staff and donor profiles;
  • Support staff across the institution in developing communication plans for important institutional initiatives, suggesting and drafting content for the plans as needed;
  • Collaborate with the website content staff, social media manager, and photographer/videographer on integrated content planning for institutional communication needs that can be used and/or repurposed across the college to support admissions, advancement, alumni engagement, academics and other areas;
  • Adhere to the college`s editorial standards for quality and style, generally following Associated Press style and Meharry-specific style guidelines;
  • Occasionally review, copy edit, or proofread written content submitted by colleagues from around campus;
  • Write press releases and pitch stories to media;
  • Conduct thorough research and fact-checking;
  • When necessary, write obituaries for impactful members of the Meharry community;
  • Demonstrate exemplary customer/client service at all times and work collaboratively with all campus schools, divisions and departments as well as alumni;
  • Take initiative, imagining, proposing and executing new communications opportunities to keep the flow of content fresh and interesting;
  • Attend college events as needed, including those in the evening and on weekends.
  • Manage projects for in-house clients, seeing to the execution of various creative components. Budget management for contract components may be necessary. Deadline management is expected. Management of client expectations may also be required.
  • Photography and minimal design capabilities are a plus.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Writing for multiple approaches, copyediting, skillful interviewing are essential. Able to manage in-house client relationships and client expectations. Planning and decision making skills preferred. Strong presentation skills are a plus. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
