An internship with Rooftop Films is a great opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students studying film, marketing, media and/or communications to learn how a nonprofit film festival works and see hundreds of great movies.

An intern’s primary focus will be to work closely with the Communications Manager and the programming and operations teams to help make Rooftop Films’ Summer Series a success including, as permissible under current safety guidelines, participating on site in the general operations of Rooftop Films screenings. Interns will also assist the communications team with marketing and outreach efforts.

Candidates must have excellent organizational and communication skills and an enthusiasm for independent cinema, its curation, and/or criticism. This internship is an excellent opportunity to participate in the process of producing our Summer Series and a great way to learn the inner workings of a film festival. We welcome undergraduate and graduate students (a passion for film is an absolute must; film production / film studies experience is a plus). Festival & Social Media Interns will work closely with the Communications Manager, Programmers, Print Traffic Coordinator, and Operations Manager to help plan and manage all aspects of running and promoting a nonprofit film festival. Their primary tasks include:

Social Media Marketing and Publicity

  • In Office:
    • Generate copy and visual content for Rooftop Films’ social media accounts
      • TikTok
      • Instagram
      • Twitter
      • Facebook
        • Requires an express interest in and talent for on the fly short-form video, smartphone photography, and digital graphics creation
        • Monitor happenings in the film/entertainment world for relevant content/outreach
        • Weekly analyzation of all accounts, followed by end-of-season wrap
    • Assist in the creation of social toolkits for screened filmmakers/distributors
    • Research, identify, and liaison with potential community partners for Summer Series events
    • Submission of events to all applicable online NYC calendar listings as each is made public
  • At Shows:
    • Learn about event documentation by attending and photographing our Summer Series programs (45+ outdoor, enhanced film screenings taking place across New York City)
    • Work with the Communications Manager to
      • document event highlights and sponsor activations
        • shoot Q&As, musical performances, and filmmaker interviews
      • generate live content from events

Programming

  • Assist in the maintenance of online databases, including photo and video cataloging
  • Pre-screen and quality check film programs before Summer Series, rentals, and other events
  • Assist with Print Traffic Coordinator with deliveries of film masters

Operations

  • Organize materials for shows
  • Assist Volunteer Coordinator and Venue Managers in on-site event management
    • Help set up and break down venues, pre- and post-show
    • Organize box office and merchandise sales, pre-show

Qualifications

  • Candidates must be able to receive college or university credit to participate in this internship.
  • Candidates must have experience with:
    • Content creation (particularly TikTok and Instagram)
    • Media management skills/ability to track and organize high volume workflow
    • Adobe Photoshop
    • Google Suite
    • Microsoft Suite
      • Bonus points for candidates with experience using:
        • The rest of the Adobe Suite (namely Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro)
        • Other video editing software(s), such as Final Cut
        • DSLR photography
        • Airtable
        • Listrak
        • Mac systems
        • Quicktime video codecs

Festival & Social Media Internship candidates would be expected to average one day a week in the office and two evening shows per week, but generally the more time you can commit the better.

Start Date: Late May/Early June 2022 (start times are flexible depending on the ending of the academic year)
