Social Media Intern at Sierra Club

$ $15 an hour

Job Title: Social Media Intern
Department: Grassroots Network
Location: Remote in California
Reports to: Volunteer Chapter Manager
Duration: 10-15 hours per week for 6 months, from the date of hire

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.

Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: The Stop Clearcutting CA Campaign has approximately two dozen volunteers, who comment on Timber Harvest Plans (THPs), write blogs, develop website content, build relationships with allies and the press – and post on social media. The Social Media Intern will manage, train, and inspire twelve volunteer’s postings on Facebook (over 5000 followers), Twitter (over 300 followers) and Instagram (over 1000 followers) with the goal of increasing our reach and ability to influence the public dialogue about clearcutting California forests. The intern will learn about forests and clearcutting in California and the government policies and situations that allow it to continue. The intern will also improve their ability to lead others via inspiration and organizing. The intern will learn more about how to utilize social media to engage more and more of the public as well as how to use Twitter to build relationships with allies and target opponents.
